How it works
CanTeam embeds a transformative food culture within schools enabling young people to learn and thrive.
CanTeam is an after school social dining initiative co-designed with young people that encourages young people and their families to enjoy nutritious, delicious and diverse foods together.
Launched and piloted by Future Foundations with funding from Big Change, we are proud to be a winner of the Big Education Challenge.
Our Solution
CanTeam is about more than just food
It's about catalysing a supportive community around the shared value of health and education.
CanTeam not only provides immediate access to healthier food choices but will encourage the development of positive eating habits that support the learning and overall wellbeing of young people.
CanTeam is designed to tackle four major barriers to eating a nutritious and balanced diet identified in research; critical to influencing Healthy Eating and Active Living:
Accessible:
Serving a nutritious after-school meal for families at schools providing a safe, familiar, community centred space to eat together.
Affordable:
Developing financial models and fundraising strategies for each CanTeam hub, ensuring that events are affordable for all families (including full subsidies where required).
Available:
Hosting afterschool meals on a regular basis (weekly/daily) across a network of CanTeam hub schools across the UK.

Appealing
We will deliver change across three key areas within schools:
Food Culture Change
Making diverse menus of subsidised nutritious food available regularly to families to enjoy foods that they wouldn’t normally choose/have access to eat.
School Culture Change
Regular social dining builds new relationships within and between students, families, and the school; creating a stronger whole school community with increased capacity to respond to local needs beyond CanTeam.
Skills & Leadership Development
Empower and train students, family volunteers and teaching staff to design and deliver CanTeam events regularly; building confidence and soft skills that empower volunteers to thrive in other areas.
Pilot Feedback
I have learnt that integration of community is essential to development in terms of happiness
and feeling a sense of belonging.
I learnt patience and leadership as well as teamwork, working alongside by fellow year 12s. It was a fun experience and I think it had a positive impact on my school.
Ijeoma, Year 12
King Solomon Academy CanTeam
I have learned that it has a significant impact on the community. The act of providing meals not only nourishes individuals but also demonstrates care
and value. The gratitude expressed by community members is truly heartening and something I will never forget.
